Applied for a couple of positions...
Also, today, I applied for a Network Administrator at a local casino called Blue Lake Casino and Hotel. Printed out the application, filled it using Foxit reader, printed out my IT certificates, list of refferences, my 4 letters of recommendation, and then went and hand delivered it to the HR department at the Blue Lake casino and Hotel. on 12/23/2013.
So that brings the stats for December to:
Applications: 2
Interviews: 3

Applied for "experienced technician" (Arcata) 6/11/13
Applied for CBIZ Field Service Tech (Eureka) 6/15/13
Had interview for "experienced technician" for Applied Technologies/Humboldt Computer Professionals Unlimited on 6/15/13. It seemed to go fairly well. They were not dressed at all for the interview, they were very laid back. Two employees interviewed me. Chris Mullen and someone else. They didnt ask me a whole lot of questions. Chris did ask me if I was really certified for all the things that I listed on my website, and I said no, I was not but, I am working towards that. They asked me if I would be willing to travel to Escondido, CA. I said no at first. They asked me what kind of compensation I would want, I said between 16-17/hr, would be good, and that I am negotiable. I asked them if they had medical and dental benefits for their employees, they said no they did not. I sent them a thank you note via email, and also telling them that I thought about their question of travel and if hired, I would not mind traveling from time to time, but I wanted to know more about the details of travel, would I be flown there? would lodging or other accommodations be covered? I have not heard back from them. I sent the thank you note on June 16.
I have not yet heard back from Umpqua Bank either. I was told they were still "deciding". I am assuming that means I am still being considered.
Applied for warehouse worker I at Suddenlink 6/24/13
Applied for Target backroom team member or team leader 6/24/13
Applied for mail carrier (Arcata) USPS 6/24/13
total applications to date: 86
total interviews to date: 12
I have been working with my case manager, Barnabas, on fine tuning my interview skills. On 6/18/13, we did a mock interview which I recorded on flip video to review and watch myself and to make improvements to my interview skills. He said for the most part it wasnt too bad, a bit choppy, and to work on making the interview more smooth, and to take out the "um's and uh's" and make myself more personable and likeable, a more warm and fuzzy character. He says my paperwork is good, I seem to be getting the interviews.
I am working on getting more certifications, I am waiting on the Department of Rehabilitation to approve paying for my IT certifications. My plan is to try and get as many IT certifications as I can complete and hopefully that will get me the "dream job" that I really want.
The MSS Financial Assistant I (Account Clerk I) exam that was originally scheduled for June 19, was cancelled due to county/state budget disagreements, and has been rescheduled for July 10, at 8am. I guess that is a good thing, that gives me more time to study for the exam, and hopefully get better at it.
I passed up on the skywest group interview because it only pays 9/hr and is part time, and I also passed up on Allied Cash advance, since that is also a minimum wage paying job as well. I need something that pays better then that.
I will continue to work on mock interviews with my case manager, and continue to study for the MSS exam. I am hoping the DOR comes through soon with their plan of helping me get my IT certifications. I do see some positions available for those kind of jobs, but I just dont have the certifications for them, yet.

In contrast to the interview with Umpqua Bank, I had an interview with Schwans food service. It started at 2pm, and I found the place behind some machine shop in Arcata, in some unlabeled building that had no signage indicating that it was Schwans. I started opening the unlocked door to "Suite 1" and a Bradley, a medium sized individual with dirty blonde hair and a friendly demeanor to himself, introduced himself as an employee of Schwans, so I said "hello, I am here for the interview at 2pm" so he says "Hi" and introduces himself and there was another guy, sitting at the end of the long desk with short dark hair that did not introduce himself at all nor did he smile or anything.
There were only two other desk chairs, and I sat in the middle one, between the two of them. Bradley talked a little about himself and the company and what the position was about. He then said the position is a lot of hours, in fact he said "you would come in at about 3am and go home around 11pm" I did a little quick math in my head, 20hrs? Damn, I thought, how do they get away with such crazy labor hours, that is nuts. Only people with absolutely no lives can do this job. It was at this point I am pretty dead set on not accepting this job no matter if they offered it to me or not, there is no way I am doing 20 hours a day, for anyone, for minimum wage or whatever and some commission. No freaking way. Bradley said he had been working for the company for 2.5 months. 2.5 months? WTH? I thought he was gonna say 2.5 years before he got to the months part lol, my brain did a little skip when he said "months", I was like how the hell did he go from route sales to territory sales lead in just 2.5 months? I can see on their chart, it goes: RSRT (no route rep lol), RSR (route sales rep), then TSL (territory sales leader), DSL (district sales leader) , then RVP (regional vice president) I had to look these up. Anyways, he said they didn't have my resume, so he asked me if I had an extra one on hand. I thought I applied online, they should have had this information already. I even did an assessment test, which I am assuming I passed since I made it to the interview stage. Bradley asked me to tell me a little about myself, and what I currently do. So I did, making sure to make eye contact with the two of them while speaking. After I was done, Bradley asked a few more pretty easy interview questions and I answered them pretty much as I always been answering them at every other interview.
Then Bradley gives me a little more of a speil of what the company is about and the position, which I am at this point just being entertained by Bradley's pseudo happiness and I am not sure what to name the guy on my left since I dont know it, maybe he is Dickhead? I dont know, but he is about to be one. Bradley explains he is finished and says that is it for the interview, then Dickhead says "No, I have a few questions", Bradley says "Oh sorry dickhead, I didnt know you had some questions for Jude" I turn to him and and smile and say "ok, what would you like to know?", he says "Are you over 18?" I almost said "Are you serious?" but said instead "Yes", then he says "In the past 5 years, have you had a ..." "nope" I said, because I did these questions already online and I knew what the questions were so I knew what the answers were, so he says to me "Dont answer the questions until I finish asking" I was kind of shocked, with the attitude, I felt as if I was being interrogated, or maybe on the witness stand or something.
This was an interview. Not a crime scene. I thought about telling Dickhead about the finer points of interview giving, but thought fuck this, I am not working for Schwans anyways, so humor me Dickhead. After a series of a few more questions I already answered online Dickhead was done with those questions and started asking me about my home business, things like "how are you advertising?" and "if I googled computer repair, where does your business show up?" I told him I used google ads and advertising for most of my online advertising, I about just had enough of Dickhead so thankfully he was done with his "interrogation" of me and I was free to go.
Welp, I know what company I am not working for, ever. I am going to report to the regional recruiter Steve Holman my poor interview experience with Schwans.
Wednesday, June 5, 2013
She also said I would have to use my own vehicle, and would get paid at a rate of 56.5 cents/mile, which she said was "awesome". She said I could be working anywhere from 40 to 70 hours per week, depending. Summer is the busy time, and winter with the holidays are the slower times. She said I could earn as much as or up to 1500-3000 biweekly during the summer and as low as 800 biweekly in the winter. I was kind of disappointed to be quite honest, because the phone interviewer made it sound like I had an established number of accounts to maintain and around 50k/yr solid pay. The way this is starting to sound is more like a upper grade Schwans job. I guess the upside is it is just beverages, no food. I get paid more in commission for bottled beverages over plastic or cans, that is what she said.
On to the official interview, she asked a total of 6 questions. It was a short interview by most interview standards that I have had, the piece of paper she was writing on had such small spaces for answers, it was kind of funny. She asked me questions like "did you ever have a time where a customer was not happy with a solution and you had to fix it?" or "did you ever have a time where a new or challenging issue came up that you were not familiar with and how did you handle it?" that kind of thing. I was able to answer them pretty easily, using my Computer Repair business as the model, fill in. It was a pretty easy interview, although I was not impressed with the pay, or type of work. I thought something was lacking or amiss. I suppose there might be room for advancement, or promotion, or lateral movement, but I just don't know. At this point I am feeling like there are better options out there.
I have 2 more interviews that are for tomorrow, June 6th. One for Service Desk Technician for Umpqua at 11am (I am not sure how you pronounce that name) which is a much better fit for my skills/experience, and then an interview for Schwans at 2pm. I think everything else that I have looked at or applied for is a better bet then Schwans, but I don't know either. I am officially Scheduled for the Fiscal Assistant Clerk (Account Clerk I) which is scheduled for Wednesday June 16th at 8am. I feel like I need to study super duper hard on the exam to get my foot in the door for a county job.
I went to the "Financial Basics I" class for the SBDC small business certificate of "Completion" yesterday. It is a total of 5 classes, and I now have 4 more to go. If I take them all, I can get the certification after taking the 5 classes. I registered for the next class "Start Up Basics" for next week, 6/12 at 6pm-8pm, that will be class number 2 of 5.
I applied for "retail salesperson familiar with Quickbooks" on Craigslist - 6/5/13
I also applied for "Detailer" at BMW of Humboldt Bay also posted on Craigslist - 6/5/13
That brings my total applications to date: 80 applications
Total interviews to date (including the 2 that will be doing 6/6/13): 11 (not including the group interview with Skywest next week)
I think that's about it for now.

Dear Jude,
Ricoh Talent Acquisition
So, that is that.
I am studying the heck out of the practice exams for Fiscal Assistant I. That exam is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday June 16.
Since April 15, 2013:
Total Applications to date: 78
Total Interviews to date: 8
RICOH - Technology Service Tech II - 5/30/13
PIC (Person In Charge) at Mckinleyvill Ray's Food Place - 5/31/13
ALLIED Cash Advance - CSR - 5/31/13 (had an issue with taking assessment test, would not let me take the test, tried both Firefox and internet explorer and both did not get the assessment test to start, so I don't know if this app will go through)
Service Manager Stapes - 6/1/13
Been doing research on Pepsi Co. on Indeed.com and Glassdoor.com and there is a mixture of reports, some people saying it is a good company to work for and others say the opposite. Some people say there is a physical exam, others say it depends on where you live/location. So I have been testing myself on the 3 minute step test, which is one of the major parts of the physical exam Pepsi Co supposedly gives. Based on this site:
http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_articles.asp?id=1115
On my first attempt, I got: 105bpm, which puts me right at average. I have been working on some cardio type work outs and plan not to drink any caffeine the morning of my interview which is Wednesday, June 5th.
I have also been taking the online test exams for the Fiscal Assistant I here:
http://www.mss.ca.gov/
(you have to use internet explorer to take the tests, makes me wonder, if there's some affiliation of some type. haha. I hate internet explorer, btw)
So, that officially puts me at 71 applications total, to date.

Met with Nat at Department of Rehabilitation on 5/8/13, we spoke for almost 2hours and covered everything about me from my disability, to work history to schooling, to home life, to health history, and a bunch of other things, and I still thought about things we could have discussed after talking with him that day.
Met with Nat again on 5/24/13, we created a IEP, which means Nat said that DOR is willing to invest in me and get me my credentials/certifications (IT technology) to help me secure a job. I am very excited about that, and hopeful that will help me in my job search process.
I have also been meeting with a case manager, Barnabas, who works at the local clinic and has been giving me great advice on interview techniques, job searching, etc.

More stuff
I have applied to the following companies online: Costco, staples, target, Kmart, uscellular, mad river hospital, Safeway, harbor freight, CVS/Caremark
In particular, staples, and Kmart, and CVS/Caremark all had an interesting personality/virtual job test that you have to take after completing the application. The test is basically a personality test. They are like 5 different questions asked 50 different ways. I felt very uncomfortable taking the tests because the tests themselves are not an accurate indicator of a good job applicant. It felt like I was taking a test to apply for the Central Intelligence Agency.
On Thursday the 11th I went out and collected applications for employment from ACE hardware, 76 gas (station), Rays (grocery store), Rite Aid (convenience, pharmacy store), the local movie theater, Eureka Natural Foods.
On Friday the 12th, It took 8hrs to fill in 6 applications, and print a resume for each.
On Saterday the 13th, I then took all the apps I had filled in and dropped them off. It took about 3hrs and I drove 35miles. I wrote down in a small index card booklet the contact names and a phone number of each place I turned in an application.
I haven't quite figured out how much time I have spent filling out the applications online. But I think I can safely say it took about 30-45 minutes for each one. So lets just say average was 30 minutes, and 9 applications. That approximately 270 minutes spent filling in online applications. That is about 4.5 hours total for the 9 applications.

shifting gears
I went to a lot of corporate sites online and filled out apps and uploaded my resume. I went to uscellular.com, I went to Verizon, I went to Costco online, since a lot of physical locations managers are no longer a major part of the hiring process. A lot of it is done online and on a different level.
So I have started doing this and it was mentioned to me there is a case worker at the medical clinic I go to when I visit my General Practitioner. So I make an appointment to see this case worker, maybe he can give me some ideas on what to do. I believe it was a 60 minute session. I had notes I made, and a letter from my audiologist describing the level of hearing I currently have. I have a service dog, which I use. During the session I am explaining the severity of my hearing to him and he says "you seem to hear me just fine." He gave me some names of some organizations that might be able to help me and helped me apply/fill out forms for vocational rehabilitation.
so, that sort of sets the scene up for what is to come.
